The holidays are a time for stories – those cherished, bittersweet memories from the past and the ones we’re creating today. This past week, as I tackled some fall cleaning with my granddaughter Maya, I was reminded just how much stories matter.
We were dusting, rearranging, and making space for our Thanksgiving family dinner. I mentioned to Maya that I had purchased a new Christmas tree and was unsure where it would go. Before we knew it, the perfect spot practically revealed itself, as if the room whispered, “Put the tree here!” So, out of the box, it came, and we both marveled at how it stood, waiting to be adorned.
But then I confessed to Maya, “I’ve never put a Christmas tree up before Thanksgiving. It feels…odd.” She smiled and agreed it looked like a perfect spot for the tree, but after all that shuffling and cleaning, we decided decorating could wait. We carefully boxed it back up, leaving the task for a day when our stamina was refreshed and all the turkey leftovers were eaten.
Making Space for the Stories That Matter
As we worked, I began to share some of the stories from past holidays – how Thanksgiving has been a tough time for me since my dad passed away that morning and how my mom, the ultimate holiday hostess, made every Christmas sparkle with joy.
Maya looked at me and said, “I didn’t know all that story, but I’m glad you shared it with me.” Her words reminded me of something powerful: even as the faces and places around the holidays change, the stories are what connect us.
It’s easy to dwell on what we’ve lost – the loved ones, the traditions, even the familiar rhythms of the season. But I’m learning to focus on what I have instead. Right now, I have Maya, the sparkle in her eyes, and the gift of time to make new memories with her.
A Shift of Heart
That afternoon wasn’t just about moving furniture or finding the perfect place for a Christmas tree. It was about shifting my focus. The space I cleared wasn’t just in my living room—it was in my heart.
Sometimes, we need to do the same kind of cleaning in our spiritual lives. What old habits, expectations, or regrets are cluttering your heart? Are there traditions or expectations that you might need to set down gently so that you can fully embrace the season?
As we prepare for Christmas, it’s not about having the perfect tree or even putting it up on the “right” day. It’s about making space for Jesus in our lives. Just as Mary “treasured up all these things and pondered them in her heart” (Luke 2:19), we need to spend time reflecting on what really matters this season.
An Invitation for You
This Christmas, I encourage you to take a moment to move a few things around – not just in your home, but in your heart. Let go of what you no longer need to carry and make room for the stories you can create today. Share those stories with the ones you cherish. You might be surprised at the joy it brings, not just to them but to you.
And if the task feels overwhelming, remember: it’s okay to pause, to leave the ‘decorating’ for another day. The holidays are a season, not a single moment. Take one step at a time.
So, here’s to making space – for the memories of yesterday, today’s loved ones, and tomorrow’s hope.
May your heart be filled with peace and anticipation as we await the celebration of Jesus’ birth.
What are Christmas traditions you treasure? What traditions are you planning on making this year?
“For unto us a child is born, unto us a son is given…And his name shall be called Wonderful, Counselor, The mighty God, The everlasting Father, The Prince of Peace” (Isaiah 9:6).
