Lessons from a Bird Feeder and the Heart of God
Spring has a way of waking things up.
The fields outside my window are slowly turning green again. Trees that looked lifeless only weeks ago now hold tiny buds of promise. The air carries birdsong from sunrise to dusk, and creation itself seems to stretch awake after a long winter.
Recently, I received a solar-powered camera bird feeder, and I confess—I am fascinated by it!
Who knew I would spend so much time watching birds dine like tiny feathered dinner guests outside my farmhouse window?
As I sit quietly observing them, against the backdrop of the farm, I’ve noticed something interesting: certain seeds attract certain birds. Cardinals come for one blend. Finches flutter toward another. Orioles love the orange slices. What I place in the feeder determines what gathers there.
And isn’t that true of our hearts as well?
What are we feeding on daily?
Before my feet even hit the floor some mornings, I am tempted to reach for my phone instead of the Word of God. Notifications. News headlines. Social media updates. Endless scrolling. Somehow, we can consume content all day long and still feel spiritually empty.
Jesus said:
“Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceeds from the mouth of God.”
(Matthew 4:4 NKJV)
Yet, if we are honest, many of us feed more consistently on opinions than on truth.
More on comparison than contentment.
More on fear than faith.
More on noise than nourishment.
No wonder our souls feel weary and worn out.
As I watched the birds gather faithfully at the feeder, another thought came to mind. They come expectantly. Daily. Trusting provision will be there waiting for them.
And I thought about God watching us.
Not watching with disappointment or impatience—but with loving attentiveness.
Just as I delight in seeing the birds arrive at what has been prepared for them, perhaps our Heavenly Father delights when we come to what He has lovingly laid before us: His Word, His presence, His peace.
Psalm 32:8 says:
“I will instruct you and teach you in the way you should go; I will counsel you with My loving eye on you.”
I love that phrase: My loving eye on you.
God sees us.
He watches and waits—not because He is distant, but because He desires communion with us.
Spring reminds me that living things require nourishment to grow. Birds return to feeders. Fields need rain. Blossoms reach toward sunlight.
And our souls need feeding too.
Yet so often, I find myself distracted by things that never truly satisfy.
So, I have been asking myself some hard but holy questions:
What is attracting me away from God’s Word?
What keeps me feeding on temporary things instead of eternal truth?
What fills my mind more than Scripture?
Isaiah 55:2 & 3, in The Message, asks: “Why do you spend your money on junk food, your hard-earned cash on cotton candy? Listen to me, listen well: Eat only the best, fill yourself with only the finest. Pay attention, come close now, listen carefully to my life-giving, life-nourishing word.”
What a beautiful invitation.
This spring, perhaps one of the healthiest things we can do is pay attention to what we are feeding our hearts and minds.
Feast on truth. Sit quietly with God before sitting endlessly in front of screens. And let His Word become our daily bread again.
Maybe that little bird feeder outside my window was never just about birds after all. Maybe it was a gentle reminder from the Lord Himself:
You become what you feed on.
And child, come closer. I have already prepared what your soul truly needs.
