I just finished reading Whatever Happens: How to Stand Firm in Your Faith When the World Is Falling Apart by Robert J. Morgan, and it sums up right where I am today. One verse he highlights has been echoing in my heart:
“Whatever happens, conduct yourselves in a manner worthy of the gospel of Christ.” Philippians 1:27.
The apostle Paul wrote this verse to the church in Philippi while he was in prison in Rome. He didn’t know what his future held, but he knew who held him. He understood that he was to live in a way that reflected the hope in Christ.
The events of the past few weeks have left many of us reeling, in shock, in numbness, and even in grief. In moments like these, Paul’s words to the Philippians meet us right where we are. “Whatever happens…” he begins. And grief, disappointment, and frustration are certainly part of the whatever.
So, how do we live out this calling when our hearts are heavy and our world feels undone? Here are a few ways I’ve found:
- Cling to Christ’s presence. He is near to the brokenhearted (Psalm 34:18). We may feel abandoned, but His promise remains: “Never will I leave you; never will I forsake you.” (Hebrews 13:5).
- Live with gentle strength. Conducting ourselves “in a manner worthy of the gospel” means we reflect Christ’s character – love, kindness, patience – even when life hurts.
- Forgive as we’ve been forgiven. Grief can stir up anger or resentment, but Paul reminds us to choose forgiveness, not retaliation. Christ Himself is our model of mercy.
- Hold onto hope. Grief tells us it’s the end of the story, but the gospel tells us resurrection is coming. Hope steadies us in the storm.
Paul closes his letter to the Philippians with a truth that anchors my soul:
“Rejoice in the Lord always. I will say it again: Rejoice! Let your gentleness be evident to all. The Lord is near. Do not be anxious about anything, but in everything, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus. Finally, brethren, whatever is true, whatever is noble, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is admirable, if anything is praiseworthy, think about such things.” (Philippians 4:4-8, NIV).
When the noise of this world distracts and depresses us, these words call us back to the foundation of our faith. Grief is real, but so is God’s nearness. Sorrow comes, but so does His peace.
Whatever happens, live in such a way that your life reflects the trust and hope you have in Christ.
Warren Wiersbe states in his commentary (The Bible Exposition Commentary, Vol. 2, Victor Books, 1996, p. 71), “The most important weapon against the enemy is not a stirring sermon or a powerful book; it is the consistent life of believers.”
We should walk the talk every day, not just on Sundays.
We sang a song by Cody Carnes, “Firm Foundation (He Won’t),” in church this week, and I found it very fitting as we walk through this broken world.
