Faith in the Cracks: Finding Growth in Hard Places

Photo of a small weed growing through a crack in the concrete.

Have you ever noticed how something small and ordinary can preach the loudest sermon? For me, it wasn’t the manicured gardens in Atlanta, but a little weed pushing its way through concrete.

I was attending a conference at the Westin, surrounded by beautiful grounds that were immaculate, with every shrub perfectly shaped, and hydrangeas bursting with color. Everything spoke of careful planning and professional care.

And yet, each morning as I walked to the venue, my eyes found the same unlikely sight: a scrappy little weed growing up out of a crack in the cement. No gardener had cut it back. No one had trampled it down. There it stood, day after day, just as resilient as the hydrangeas.

That weed began to speak to my heart.

Roots in Hard Places

How could it grow? Hidden beneath the concrete, its roots must have found the smallest pocket of soil and clung tightly to it. Its strength wasn’t in what I could see above ground, but in what was anchored below.

Isn’t that true for us as believers? Our spiritual growth depends on where our roots lie. Paul writes in Colossians 2:6-7 (NIV):

“So then, just as you received Christ Jesus as Lord, continue to live your lives in him, rooted and built up in him, strengthened in the faith as you were taught, and overflowing with thankfulness.”

Even when life feels like concrete pressing down, even when our world seems brutal, our roots in Christ can sustain us.

Resilience of Faith

That little weed had no caretaker. No one came to water it. No one fertilized it. And yet, it survived. It reminded me of Paul’s words in II Corinthians 4:8-9 (NIV):

“We are hard pressed on every side, but not crushed; perplexed, but not in despair; persecuted, but not abandoned; struck down, but not destroyed.”

Christian growth doesn’t only happen in lush gardens with perfect conditions. Often, it happens in the cracks, when we are pressed, when life feels barren, and when no one seems to notice. Yet, God notices. His Spirit nourishes us in unseen ways, giving us strength to rise day after day.

Beauty Beyond the Expected

The hydrangeas were breathtaking, but that little weed was beautiful in its own way. It stood as a symbol of perseverance.

Perhaps your life right now feels more like a crack in the cement than a manicured garden. You wonder how anything good could grow there. Take heart, God delights in bringing life where it seems impossible. He makes streams flow in the desert and brings hope to the hopeless (Isaiah 43:19).

An Invitation

Friend, where are your roots today? Are they deeply rooted in Christ, able to draw strength even in difficult times?

Let that little weed remind us: growth is possible even when conditions seem bleak. God’s Word is our soil, His Spirit our sustenance. If we remain rooted in Him, He will cause us to flourish – in and out of season.

The next time you see a flower, or even a weed, pushing through the cracks, let it whisper to your heart: Keep growing. Keep reaching. God sees you.
